Concept description

Repression is one of Freud’s concepts for psychical conflict. It differs from consciously deciding not to express a thought. Keeping a drive-representative from consciousness does not end its psychical activity.

Its effects may return through dreams, symptoms, or indirect expression. This is not the unchanged reappearance of a stored event. Compromise formations express transformed relations between conflicting tendencies.

The unconscious and the repressed are not coextensive, and Freud revises their relation in later models. Assuming an unchanging structure across his writings obscures this development. The 1915 essay provides this entry’s central context.

Marcuse’s discussion of social constraint and instinctual organization reinterprets Freud. Social censorship, political coercion, and psychical repression are not identical mechanisms even where translation uses related terms. This historical explanation is not a diagnostic tool.
