Concept description

Communicative action, for Habermas, is action coordinated through participants’ orientation towards mutual understanding. Speaking does not by itself satisfy this definition: language can also pursue strategic effects on others.

An understanding-oriented exchange involves criticizable claims about truth, normative rightness, and sincerity. Participants need not actually agree about everything. What matters is the possibility of answering objections with reasons and seeking agreement through justification rather than compulsion.

A unanimous meeting does not prove these conditions were met. Threats, unequal opportunities to speak, or unequal access to information may have produced its outcome. The concept therefore offers a critical framework for social coordination rather than advice about politeness.

The distinction between lifeworld and system examines tensions between communication and mechanisms such as money and administrative power. Habermas does not propose replacing all economic or administrative processes with conversation; he investigates their limits and democratic legitimacy.
