Concept description

Negative dialectics criticizes the claim that conceptual thought exhausts its objects. Definition and classification are indispensable, yet an object’s determinations do not all fit the category used. This nonclosure between concept and object gives nonidentity its importance for Adorno.

Negativity means neither reversing every proposition nor abandoning thought. Instead of treating contradictions as resolved in a final reconciliation, thought tests its explanatory forms against their objects. Criticism keeps both the necessity and the limits of concepts in view.

Classifying someone by occupation, citizenship, or a statistical category can serve institutional purposes. Assuming that this exhausts the person’s experience identifies the singular being with the category. The example introduces the problem without replacing Adorno’s social analysis.

Suffering and bodily experience recall what abstract systems disregard. Negative dialectics is consequently more than a logical technique. It is a historically situated engagement with Hegel, Marx, and Kant, not a recipe summarized as refusing synthesis.
