Concept description

In On the Concept of History, Jetztzeit concerns a present intensified through a political and historical encounter with the past. Rendering it as now-time helps distinguish it from a merely current calendar moment. Suppressed or unrealized possibilities can become legible in such a present.

Benjamin challenges empty, homogeneous time, in which events accumulate in equivalent units and progress appears almost automatic. Jetztzeit instead allows historical connection to involve interruption and intervention.

A contemporary movement’s remembrance of an earlier struggle is not simply copying a model. Which losses and promises reappear, and how earlier actors are remembered without becoming instruments of present purposes, remain questions. Not every commemoration constitutes Jetztzeit.

Messianic language and historical materialism coexist tensely in the text. This is neither straightforward prophecy nor a fixed religious program. Reducing the term to an intense personal moment also severs its relation to oppressed histories and the critique of progress.
