Concept description

The dialectical image concerns past and present becoming legible through a particular encounter in Benjamin’s Arcades Project. Historical fragments do not form a linear sequence; a constellation reveals a tension that was not previously apparent.

An arcade, shop window, fashion detail, or advertisement is more than an illustration of its period. A specific relation with present questions can disclose social contradictions in the surviving material. This requires historical specificity rather than an arbitrary analogy.

This dialectic implies a temporality different from uninterrupted narrative progress. Standstill and awakening challenge the treatment of the past as a completed stage. Assembled fragments do not lose their differences within a final unity.

The concept is not restricted to a type of visual picture. Quotation, montage, and historical writing are also at issue. Its proximity to Jetztzeit concerns interruption, without making the two expressions interchangeable.
