Concept description

Social character connects shared conditions of life with psychic orientations in Fromm. It does not assume that every member of a group has the same personality; it investigates how common circumstances support particular tendencies.

A social order operates through more than external sanctions. How people desire work, authority, or success, and what conduct appears natural, also contributes to its reproduction. These orientations cannot be derived solely from consciously held ideas.

The analysis does not calculate individual behaviour automatically from social position. Different biographies and conflicting experiences produce differences within shared circumstances. A group tendency is distinct from a judgment about a person.

Fromm relates Freud’s study of psychical conflict to historical institutions, asking how economic and psychological levels interact rather than treating either as a complete explanation of the other.
