Concept description

In The Storyteller, narrative is a form through which experience passes between people. The storyteller offers more than interesting events: listeners can connect what is told with their own lives. Counsel participates in the continuation of a story rather than simply issuing an instruction.

Benjamin develops the essay through Nikolai Leskov, considering craft, travel, and settled life as sources of narration. Storytelling is not a timeless essence of oral culture; forms of work and listening shape its possibilities.

Information’s demand for novelty and immediate explanation differs from a story’s capacity for reinterpretation over time. The novel provides another configuration around the solitary reader and the search for meaning. These distinctions do not declare all news worthless or every old story wise.

Difficulties in communicating experience belong to war, modern life, and social change. Equating narration with a technique for attracting attention in content production erases this historical problem. The issue is how experience circulates, among whom, and under which conditions.
