Concept description

The unconscious describes psychical activity exceeding conscious awareness in Freud. Things outside awareness do not all belong to one identical class: he develops descriptive, dynamic, and systematic uses of the term.

Information not currently recalled differs from content prevented from becoming conscious through conflict. This helps distinguish the preconscious from repressed material. The unconscious is not simply an inactive or unspecified part of mind.

Dream-work, symptoms, and slips provide materials for Freud’s investigation. Condensation and displacement address relations between manifest expressions and psychical conflict. Assigning a ready-made hidden motive to every everyday mistake does not replace inquiry.

Frankfurt readings investigate relations between unconscious processes and social institutions. Fromm and Marcuse offer different accounts of linking psychic life with historical power. The entry presents a historical theoretical concept rather than identifying it with contemporary clinical assessment.
